PAC Commemorates 150th Anniversary of First Day Of School

On this day, 150 years ago, Prince Alfred College commenced its first day of class, in quite humble beginnings.

With the current school site still under construction, 28 students were enrolled to attend Prince Alfred College’s first lessons at the (then) Methodist Lecture Hall, which still stands today at the rear of the Adelaide City Council offices, at 25 Pirie Street.

This historic occasion  was celebrated this morning with a morning tea at the  Lecture  Hall.  Attendees included members of the PAC community and representatives from the Uniting Church (formerly Methodist Church) responsible for the founding of the College, plus direct descendants and family members of those first day students from back in 1869.

The 150th Anniversary cake provided for the morning tea was served via a sterling silver cake fork , provided by the Drew Family, which was used at the Official Opening of the College 150 years ago,

Speaking at the function, Mr Bradley Fenner, Headmaster, Prince Alfred College, said that he was looking forward to the opportunities for people to re-connect and celebrate the achievements and ongoing successes of Prince Alfred College throughout this Sesquicentenary year.

“Further to this morning’s function, we are also hosting a range community events, providing a number of opportunities for many within our wider community to come together, celebrate our beginnings, our history and our heritage, and look towards an ever brighter future for PAC, said Mr Fenner.

A range of Sesquicentenary memorabilia has also been created for this hallmark anniversary in addition to the commissioning of a commemorative coffee table book and limited edition Sesquicentenary Red Wine Magnums. These items will go on sale in early February.
